Ledger OS™ and Device Apps Policy

By using Ledger hardware wallets (“Ledger Devices”), you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Ledger OS™ and Device Apps Policy.

Ledger is committed to providing you with the best possible experience. This includes regular firmware updates to improve your Ledger Devices’ performance, security and features. This policy explains how we handle these updates, particularly regarding end-of-life Ledger Devices (“EoL Ledger Devices”). You can find the current list of EoL Ledger Devices at the end of this document.

For more information about the functioning of Ledger Devices, and in particular the Secure Element, please visit Ledger Academy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF LEDGER OS™ AND DEVICE APPS

The firmware on your Ledger Devices comprises two elements: the various applications you choose to download ("Device Apps") and the Ledger proprietary customized operating system ("Ledger OS™").

To interact with a given blockchain (the “Blockchain Services”), you need to download the corresponding Device App on your Ledger Device. Except for a limited number of Devices Apps, Device Apps are developed by third-party developers. Furthermore, Ledger OS™ operates each of your Device Apps independently, each separate from the others, within the tamper-proof Secure Element, ensuring your device's security. Ledger OS™ drives the secure screen, and executes all cryptographic operations directly within the Secure Element.

Please, note the following:

  • this Ledger OS™ and Device Apps Policy does not apply to your use of Ledger Live™, which use is governed by Ledger Live Terms of Use.

  • this Ledger OS™ and Device Apps Policy only applies to Ledger OS™ and Device Apps developed by Ledger.

  • When a given Device App is developed by a third-party developer, this third party assumes complete responsibility for the functioning of this Device App and any potential damage this application may cause to you.

  • The name of the developer (and how to reach them) is available on the My Ledger section of Ledger Live and in the settings of each Device App in your Ledger Devices.

WHY SHOULD I UPDATE MY LEDGER OS™ AND MY DEVICE APPS?

To Keep Your Device Secure

Crypto scams evolve rapidly alongside new innovations. To combat these threats, Ledger established Ledger Donjon, a team of elite white-hat hackers specializing in software and hardware security. They continuously conduct security assessments and collaborate with internal development teams to implement and maintain Ledger’s high security standards through updates to Ledger OS™ and Device Apps developed by Ledger.

To Support New Digital Assets, new Features, new Networks and enhance performance

In the ever-evolving realm of digital assets, existing Blockchain Services consistently introduce new features, functionalities, and disruptive solutions. Simultaneously, new Blockchain Services emerge with innovative protocols and advancements. Consequently, Device Apps must be perpetually updated to ensure users can always access and benefit from the latest improvements and cutting-edge solutions.

HOW OFTEN DO WE UPDATE LEDGER OS™ AND DEVICE APPS DEVELOPED BY LEDGER?

Ledger is committed to releasing updates regularly to maintain the security and functionality of Ledger Devices. The frequency of these updates depends on the type of update (such as security enhancements, new features, or compatibility improvements) and the specific product involved. Some updates may be deployed promptly in response to emerging issues, while others are scheduled periodically based on ongoing development cycles.

Because third-party developers manage their Device App updates, their release schedules and availability can vary significantly, independent of Ledger's update processes.

The Update Process

  • Notification: We'll let you know when updates are available. You can choose to install them right away or later.

  • Installation: The installation process depends on the type of update. You'll find detailed instructions in the update notification.

FIRMWARE UPDATES FOR EOL LEDGER DEVICES

For two (2) years following a Ledger Device's End of Life (EOL) declaration, Ledger will provide both evolutionary updates (e.g. adapting to changes in blockchain protocols, UX enhancements) and corrective updates (e.g. bug fixes, security improvements). After this two-year period, the Device Apps will be frozen, meaning they may continue to function but will not receive updates to adapt to changes in underlying protocols.

In the third (3) year after a Ledger Device's End of Life (EOL) declaration, Ledger will provide only corrective updates for security vulnerabilities.

Reminder: This commitment applies only to Ledger OS™ and Device Apps developed by Ledger that were available on the Ledger Device at the time it was declared EOL. For clarity, this means it does not extend to functionalities that did not exist when the Ledger Device was declared EOL, nor to new Device Apps published by Ledger after the device was declared EOL. These updates may or may not be ported to EOL Ledger Devices at Ledger's sole discretion.

Failing to update your Ledger Device firmware can lead to several issues, including application instability or complete failure. While some blockchains may temporarily function, significant network protocol changes could halt functionality of your Ledger Device. In some cases, outdated firmware may prevent access to funds or Blockchain Services. Although your Recovery Phrase allows wallet restoration on a compatible device, keeping firmware updated is crucial for uninterrupted access and security.

To address these potential consequences, we recommend switching to a newer Ledger Device for the best security and functionality.

We also want to reemphasize that in any case, you will always be able to recover access to your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase. To find more information about how to restore your accounts, please visit here: https://support.ledger.com/article/4404382560913-zd

Your Responsibility

  • Regular Updates: It's your responsibility to install updates promptly to keep your Ledger Devices secure and working correctly.

  • Backup: Before installing any update, we recommend you check the availability and integrity of your Secret Recovery Phrase. For details, visit https://support.ledger.com/fr/article/360007223753-zd
